چکیده

Our ongoing research in performance theory integrates methods for complex instrument parameter spaces and models for musical gestures. The latter are modelled as parametric curves residing in high-dimensional symbolic and physical gesture spaces. This article shortly exposes basic concepts of those spaces and the construction of symbolic gesture curves. It then discusses the problem of fitting physical gesture curves (which are based on their symbolic counterparts) as a function of anatomical and Newtonian constraints. Our solution makes use of Sturm’s zero theorem for cubic splines. The resulting curves can be applied to animation of avatar parts in an animation system. This theory is implemented in the latest version of the performance component of a well-known modular software for analysis, composition, and performance.

Midcourse Trajectory Shaping for Air and Ballistic Defence Guidance Using Bezier Curves

A near-optimal midcourse trajectory shaping guidance algorithm is proposed for both air and ballistic target engagement mission attributes for generic long range interceptor missile. This guidance methodology is based on the maximum final velocity as the objective function and maximum permissible flight altitude as the in-flight state constraint as well as the head-on orientation as the termina...

Multimodal Analysis of Piano Performances Portraying Different Emotions

This paper discusses the role of gestural vs auditive components of a piano performance when the performer is prompted to portray a specific emotion. Pianist William Westney was asked to perform a short passage from a specific piece of music 6 times, 3 times without making any deliberate changes, and 3 times where the music was intended to portray the emotions happy, sad and angry, respectively...

Temporal aspects of articulatory control

This contribution is focused on temporal aspects of articulatory control during the production of speech. We review a set of computational and experimental results whose focus is on intragestural, transgestural, and intergestural timing properties. The computational results are based on recent developments of the task-dynamic model of gestural patterning. These developments are focused on the s...

An effective method based on the angular constraint to detect Pareto points in bi-criteria optimization problems

The most important issue in multi-objective optimization problems is to determine the Pareto points along the Pareto frontier. If the optimization problem involves multiple conflicting objectives, the results obtained from the Pareto-optimality will have the trade-off solutions that shaping the Pareto frontier. Each of these solutions lies at the boundary of the Pareto frontier, such that the i...

The Importance of Leadership and Organizational Capacity in Shaping Health Workers’ Motivational Reactions to Performance-Based Financing: A Multiple Case Study in Burkina Faso

Background Performance-based financing (PBF) is currently tested in many low- and middle-income countries as a health system strengthening strategy. One of the main mechanisms through which PBF is assumed to effect change is by motivating health workers to improve their service delivery performance. This article aims at a better understanding of such motivational effects of PBF. In partic...
